July 1, 2017 Henry T. Reath Trophy Pursuit Race

The season opener pursuit style race had 16 participants with a spectacular breeze and lots of MDI twists in it as well. Mid-morning had dense fog on this side of the island with blazing sunshine in Somesville and Bah Hahbah. Like clockwork, the sea breeze smoked and the blue skies and seas were twinkling everywhere. Fog lifted, everyone scrambled to get their acts together and it was a sprint to start at Mark Q.

Luders were off first, followed by IODs, and then the big, fast boats were ready to sprint. Course was selected to go clockwise around the Cranberries to finish at Gilpatrick Ledge. The smaller, slower boats actually had some luck as many of them got to turn the NE corner of Islesford in breeze and sprint out around Baker Island in nice breeze. The bigger boats got hung up in some doldrums off the IDR and had a difficult time getting through the glassy water to the ripples of breeze to the east. Ondine and Watermark got a big jump while Far Out and Lynnette had a rough time finding breeze.

The wind got wacky again outside of Baker with some sloppy 4-6' seas. Watermark, Ondine, and Dakota seemed to break free, Then, at the outlet of the Western Way more breeze craziness ensued as a warm land breeze slipped off the Seaview, Manset and SW Harbor shores. Lynnette consumed Watermark as they passed the SE tip of Greening Island only a quarter mile to the finish. Game over.

Far Out Challenge

The final chapter in a summer of cruising class sailing brought 23 boats out to race around the Cranberry Islands. The pursuit race starts the slower boats first with a time correction so the order which boats cross the finish line is their finish position. Despite a bit of thin clouds, the breeze piped in from the south for a wonderful afternoon of sailing.

Stampede skippered by David Conway won his first race ever sailed in the boat after owning it for more than 10 years. The race also attracted some long idle boats to come out and rumble with a wide variety of sizes and types of boats on hand.

It was a foggy east wind that actually begged us to go long..... Yes, it wouldn't get us there and then evaporate but actually built to bring us home. Starting from just outside Northeast Harbor the eight boat fleet left Baker Island to starboard and headed out to bisect the Ducks and return to Gilpatrick Cove. Lynnette won line honors but Far Out corrected ahead by two minutes helmed by Joe Kief of Bar Harbor with fellow instructors from the NE Harbor Sailing School and US Olympian sailboard athlete Carson Crain.

Lynnette won the season long series of four races with consistency squeaking it out over last year's champion Joe Weber in Dreadnought. The NE Harbor Fleet Cruising race schedule wraps up next week with a pursuit race which has the slower boats start first and the larger, faster boats hunt them down with the first to finish actually winning the race. Many one design boats like Luders and IODs will also participate.

Another picturesque day in the cooling seabreezes of MDI. A fuzzy paleness made the dayseem warm and hot but it really wasn't at all. While the rest of the country is sweltering, it's really nice to be in Maine.

A long beat out to Long Ledge and a slide back to the entrance buoy at NEH had almost all of the boats grouped together. Lynnette worked the angles and made sure that Dreadnought could not pass in the occasional big shifts. The cool breeze was from the left off Cranberry and warm shots of thermal breeze blasted from the land of Manset on the right side.

The breeze was starting to get very squirrelly and the course was changed to finish in the middle of the Harbor. Congrats to Lynnette on taking the day and leading the Series scores, too.

Seven boats took advantage of the brilliant sunshine and challenging conditions on The Great Harbor today. The breeze started in the east but was very unstable and feeble. The cold temps of last night kept the heat pump from turning on and pulling in the sea breeze from the south.

Poppaea won the day with Lyn Cook captaining Lynnette right behind them. Ranger ghosted in third as they found a very large gaping hole about a quarter mile from the finish at Greening. Sidewinder and Scarlett Bee followed with the Bee making the time limit by 4 seconds. Watermark missed by just over 2 minutes and would have corrected in front of the Bee. But alas, they got scored a DNF.

Congrats to Poppaea on winning the day and the overall Max Trophy for the August Cruise and DERW. This event has more trophies than Tee-Ball so, please show up at the annual awards on August 29 and haul off a bag of silver (or at least get your picture taken with it.)

The Great Harbor Dream Pursuit Race and Tom Morris Memorial 2015

Spectacular sailing conditions with a record turnout of participants made for a fun ‘pursuit style’ chase race around the Cranberries. Thirty-four boats competed from the slowest boat Seabiscuit, a Luders 16 without spinnaker to the gigantic and speedy Poppaea, a Morris 454. The breeze made for a close hauled beat out the Western Way followed by a beam reach over to Baker Island. Then a decision needed to be made on which side to pass Sutton Island on the sprint back to Gilpatrick Cove in Northeast Harbor. Most boats chose the south side of the island but those who took a risk and went north made big gains. Cybele cane within a boat length of catching Dreadnought and Far Out.

It was Far Out with helmsman Joe Kief, an instructor at the NE Harbor Sailing School with his all youth crew of Liana Folger, Andrew and William Kimball, Frosty Pepper, Olympic athlete Carson Crain, and Izaak Giberson who beat everyone. Far Out is a Morris 52 and as the first Morris built yacht they also won the Tom Morris Memorial Trophy.

The sailing event was followed by a raucous celebration at the Northeast Harbor Fleet. The new fleet of turbo 420 sailboats and the dock at Greening Island are now in place to benefit all of the youth of MDI. Acquiring a skill which can last a lifetime is easier and more fun with the High School team and the youth programs from the Cranberries, SW, NE, Seal, and Bar Harbors all utilizing the boats and staff. Thanks to all of the many contributors who are making the Dream come true.

July 26, 2015

Sketchy light east wind with an overcast sky and precipitous humidity was on hand for today's race. The fleet snarled with a start just outside Northeast Harbor at exactly low tide. Boats which favored the left found breeze under Bear Island as they all headed out the Eastern Way to Lewis Rock off Seal Harbor. Dreadnought led the way with her ginormous blue and white assymetrical spinnaker barely holding full in the light onshore breeze. Sailors reached to Islesford to entertain the Sunday brunch crowd before heading NW to the southern tip of Greening Island off Southwest Harbor.

Lynnette and Fleetwing were trying their best to cut down the big black boat's lead but to no avail as the taller mast worked in the zephyr-like breezes. As the mist turned into rain, the sailors struggled back from Seal Harbor to finish at Bear Island and got home to enjoy a very hot shower.

Congrats to Dreadnought and Joe Weber on taking the day.

Next Sunday will be the Great Harbor Dream Celebratory Pursuit Race with a start for the slowest boats from Q at about 1pm.
